Abstract

When hypertension and diabetes coexist, the development of cardiovascular disease is higher. Type 2 diabetes causes cardiovascular events 3 times more than other risk factors. Considering this, prevention of diabetes is important to prevent cardiovascular events. Recent large-scale randomized clinical and basic studies with anti-hypertensive drugs demonstrate that new-onset of diabetes is associated with anti-hypertensive drugs. Beta-blockers and diuretics are independently associated with a higher risk of type 2 diabetes. By contrast, angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin II type 1 receptor blockers, and calcium channel blockers are not. When we choose the anti-hypertensive drugs in patients with high risk, we should consider this new finding in addition to the efficacy of blood pressure lowering.
